This wood sculpture depicts the Putana Vadh wherein lord Kirshna can be seen sucking milk from the breasts of Demoness Putana. Lord Krishna can be seen sitting on the lap of Putana, who has dressed herself as a beautiful woman. She is shown cradling the infant lord Krishna. She is depicted in a seated posture, while a reclining figure depicting the death of Putana is depicted behind her. The figures are resting on a four-foot bench like pedestal.

Significance

  • ReligiousPutana was a demoness whose job was to kill newborn babies. She was appointed by Kansa, the maternal uncle of Shri Krishna, to eliminate the one who according to him, shall be the cause of the death. Kansa feared for his life after a divine prophecy cautioned him about the birth of his sister devaki's eighth child.
